02. Our Hands

We are looking at our hands by Donna Billick. This sculpture was completed in 2000 and it is made out of concrete and Terrazzo. It is 12 ft high and it came about because the city of Chico was building a new City Hall and wanted to incorporate artwork into the project. This sculpture, according to the artist, is meant to be welcoming and really a kind of nurturing gesture because of course so many important things happen in City Hall and people come in and out for lots and lots of different reasons. The artist herself Donna Billick, was trained in Italy in the process of Terrazzo which is usually used for floors it's an Ancient Ancient media concrete mixed with marble and granite bits she used to refer to it as cookie dough is pretty funny when I went to visit her in her Studio watching her Pat on these clumps of rough looking wet concrete and this metal Armature and created the hands and she also wanted to really connect it to Chico in a very meaningful way so she included of course the creeks and downtown and the Orchards she even went into the creek and gathered different kinds of rock in the creek bed and included it right in the sculpture really look closely you'll see pieces of rock embedded in the sculpture.
